Genetic testing is done to look for mutations in certain genes. For example a BRCA genetic test will look for mutations in the BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes. A genetic test panel will look for mutations in several genes at the same time. Usually, this test is done by taking a blood sample.
Before having a genetic test for this program, you will receive more specific information about what it would mean to have a mutation in the BRCA1 or BRCA2 genes or other ovarian cancer risk genes. Specifically, a genetic counsellor will take the time to talk about the chances of developing ovarian and other cancers and what the options are for cancer screening and prevention.
